"Hey Eliot,
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the Masters Worlds tournament. It was a great experience competing. Getting ready to compete was a little nerve wracking, but knowing that I had prepared well and had a solid game plan kept the nerves under control. Once the first fight started, all of that went out the window and it was easy to just focus on the Jiu Jitsu and have fun. Five minutes goes by quick! It was so much fun competing – it really helps you gauge your strengths and weaknesses. This was my fourth tournament this year and win or lose, every match I had this year was fun, exciting, and educational. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of knowing that you went out there and did your best, regardless of the final score. I’m looking forward to continuing to compete and improve my game!
However, even more significant is the whole process of preparing for the tournament. Since I made the decision to compete at Worlds a few months in advance, it gave me a lot of time to prepare my game plan and get in shape for competition. Many thanks to you for helping me develop my plan, and I especially have lots of gratitude for all of my team mates and training partners who helped me get ready! Nothing improves your Jiu Jitsu like preparing for a tournament. It brings so much focus on what you need to work on and really helps you work on your whole game – especially those areas that you not comfortable in! I think of all the times that I had difficulty motivating myself to train, but the thought of the tournament pushed me through the barriers. I think I improved my game more in the past two months than I had in the previous six months because I was focused on competition.
Please continue to encourage us to compete. I think everyone should try it out at least once, and I would bet that many decide to go back and do it again. When I was starting to compete, I was concerned about losing or not doing well (and how that would look to others), but I found that most people respect the fact that you are putting yourself out there more than anything else. I think most of our teammates would surprise themselves and find that they are able to compete well with their peers.
