Dear EDH Jiu Jitsu,

With some time away from work and to ourselves, the end and beginning of the year is a great time to REFLECT and MAKE PLANS into the next. Most of these plans have something to do with CHANGE, and working towards a new and different you. Many times, TRAINING will help you get through the hard times.

CHANGE is one of the most difficult things to do.

- Why?
Most of the time CHANGE has to do with being uncomfortable. When we are uncomfortable, we quit.

- How can Jiu-Jitsu help with CHANGE?
Watch this 60 sec video.  Jiu-Jitsu is about getting to your uncomfortable and finding comfort. Some call it discipline, some call it perseverance, some call it patience, some call it persistence, some call it training..... What would you call it?

- Apply the lessons from the mat, off the mat.
When we live a jiujitsu lifestyle, we find that we are able to apply the lessons from the mat, off the mat. Come train and become comfortable with the uncomfortable, become comfortable and know that it will lead to change.

Into 2015 if there is anything we can do as a team to help you grow stronger, please let us know. E-mail, phone, text, or even letter writing whatever works for you we want to contribute!

OSS!

Many blessings to everyone during this time of giving and cheers! We wish everyone a safe and happy time with their family and friends! Today many of us received much from around us. Just like we give and take on the mat in jiujitsu let's find the opportunity to give to those around us off the mat!

E-mail from a Teammate on Competition:
Here is an email on competition for those who are still on the fence about this Saturday and future tournament experiences... Make sure you PRE-REGISTER with Eliot to get your discount!

"Hey Eliot,

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the Masters Worlds tournament.  It was a great experience competing.  Getting ready to compete was a little nerve wracking, but knowing that I had prepared well and had a solid game plan kept the nerves under control.  Once the first fight started, all of that went out the window and it was easy to just focus on the Jiu Jitsu and have fun.  Five minutes goes by quick!  It was so much fun competing – it really helps you gauge your strengths and weaknesses.  This was my fourth tournament this year and win or lose, every match I had this year was fun, exciting, and educational. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of knowing that you went out there and did your best, regardless of the final score.   I’m looking forward to continuing to compete and improve my game!

However, even more significant is the whole process of preparing for the tournament.  Since I made the decision to compete at Worlds a few months in advance, it gave me a lot of time to prepare my game plan and get in shape for competition.  Many thanks to you for helping me develop my plan, and I especially have lots of gratitude for all of my team mates and training partners who helped me get ready!  Nothing improves your Jiu Jitsu like preparing for a tournament.  It brings so much focus on what you need to work on and really helps you work on your whole game – especially those areas that you not comfortable in! I think of all the times that I had difficulty motivating myself to train, but the thought of the tournament pushed me through the barriers.   I think I improved my game more in the past two months than I had in the previous six months because I was focused on competition.

Please continue to encourage us to compete.  I think everyone should try it out at least once, and I would bet that many decide to go back and do it again.  When I was starting to compete, I was concerned about losing or not doing well (and how that would look to others), but I found that most people respect the fact that you are putting yourself out there more than anything else.  I think most of our teammates would surprise themselves and find that they are able to compete well with their peers.

OSS,"

Dear EDH Jiujitsu Team,

We are just coming off a tournament weekend at the NoGi Worlds. Unfortunately we didn't bring back any medalists this year. However, Eliot had an impressive win in the absolute division to multiple world champion, Roberto Alancar, and brought back some valuable experience after a 2-0 loss to Metamoris veteran Gary Tonnon and 2-0 loss to ADCC Champion Joao Assis.

There are several tournaments coming up this month. Make sure to check in with your coach on the details.

A big thank you to everyone who was able to participate in our seminar with Professor Steve Patterson. Please take the time to write him a message on facebook and like his page "University of Ground Fighting" and help promote his school and success!

Every visiting instructor and seminar at EDH is our effort to bring in talent from every corner of the world to give our students in El Dorado Hills the best experience on and off the mats! Professor Steve is not only a instructor but also an elite level competitor. We hope you were able to train with him or learn from him during his visit!

9/5/2014 Jiu-Jitsu & Martial Arts in El Dorado Hills

Dear EDH BJJ TEAM,

We are heading into the last qtr of the year! Let's take a little time to assess where we are...... Are we heading in the right direction? Regardless of the speed we move, as long as we are headed in the right direction we will eventually get there!

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?
If there is anything we can do to help you achieve your goals, please let us know!

This Wednesday, September 10th, we will host our BELT PROMOTION (Graduation) ceremony in the Gi. There are no regular classes on this day (no 7am) and our evening schedule is as follows.

Kids & Teens: 6:00-7:00pm
(Please wear your Gi. We will shift to the gi on Monday, September 8th)
Adults: 7:15-8:00pm
(ALL Adults, beginner, 7AM, and NoGi, please attend in the Gi)

Belt Graduation takes place twice a year. Once in the early fall and once in the early spring. The event is an occasion to celebrate everyone's hard work, dedication, and perseverance to a better stronger life.

Why everyone?
Because we can't do jiu-jitsu alone... Just as tournament preparation is a reflection of everyone coming together to train for a common purpose, so is our belt promotions. It's a reflection of a team moving and supporting the spirit to learn and improve.

For those interested, we will get together for a bite  at Relish following the adult ceremony. All family and friends are welcome!

EDH BJJ TEAM!

It's already February! Let's take the time to look at our attendance cards and mark the total dates we were on the mat this month. If it was what you were shooting for GREAT! If it was less, how will you make it up? If it was more AWESOME! Figure out a number that works for you and make it a point to do so! If you can't..... How can I help you?!?

New Schedule:
New Schedule starts next week, please refer to the attached schedule for details on some of the new classes.

Car Pooling:
Parents! Please network with each other in and out of class. We want to decrease class absence as much as possible. If you are able to work out an alternating schedule, that would be great!

Congrats Rich!
Rich R. finished Silver in the gi and Bronze in the Nogi division at the UGF tournament in Sacrament this past weekend. Please give him a congrats the next time you see him!

SF Open 2/9/2014 Sunday:
The SF Open is this weekend. Details about the tournament can be found online at  http://ibjjf.org/championship/san-francisco-international-open-ibjjf-championship/
My recommendation is to be there when you team is competing, but also to make it a point to watch the black belts in action. There will be some great matches on the mats this weekend. In addition to watching some jiu-jitsu, enjoy the city! I believe the Kelly family will be visiting the aquarium on the pier! Anyone care to join?!?

Team EDH,

The second full week of the year has begun! Start your week with a smile and bring your enthusiasm from the streets to the mat! By now you should have some goals in mind and maybe written them down. One recommendation: WRITE YOUR GOALS ON THE BACK OF YOUR ATTENDANCE CARD. THIS WILL HELP YOU SEE IT EVERY TIME YOU ARE ON THE MAT! If you are having difficulty with this talk to an upper belt, they would love to help you out.

New Schedule will be starting the first full week of February! The basic schedule format will be the same, with slight adjustments to provide a more focused curriculum fitting to the students needs, better student to teacher ratio, and class format. An email will follow later this week with the schedule attached.

Kids Winter Belt Promotions: 1/22/2014
Class: 6:00-6:30
Ceremony: 6:30-7:00
(Bring a friend to class and invite the entire family for this special occasion!)
At EDH-BJJ Belt promotions take place twice a year. Once in Dec/Jan and once in June/July. Promotions reflect a great accomplishment to both the parents and students. Thank you for supporting each other in the long yet very rewarding process. Belt promotions are a great time to celebrate dedication and leadership by both the student and guardians.

All friends and family are welcome to join us for this very special event!

Winter Gear is ready for pre-orders. Receive a 10% discount when you pre-order and pre-pay on or before January 20!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EDH JIU JITSU!

The beginning of the year is full of enthusiasm and motivation! That's awesome! Something to think about as we roll into 2014..... "Motivation is what gets us in the dojo. DEDICATION is what keeps us improving."

Over the next few weeks we will be sending out some information on goal setting and expectations to help everyone meet their goals in 2014.

Here is the first step:

Take a few minutes to total up your attendance before you receive your new attendance card. When were you MOTIVATED? When did you need to be DEDICATED? Looking at this will help you set new goals and improve on your efforts in 2014.

Attached is an outline of the three program at EDH. Read through them and decide which program you fit into. There is also a weekly workout sheet you can fill out to help schedule your workouts. The busier you are the more important it is to fill this out. Please ask Eliot if you have any questions.
